The VCHT Resiliency Project is born out of lessons learned after Hurricane Maria. Climate change is producing more active hurricane seasons, stronger hurricanes, and from what we experienced during this year's season, hurricanes that are intensifying faster and lasting longer. Vieques is extremely vulnerable to hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. Emergencies, when they occur, can isolate Vieques for many weeks at a time, as we were with Hurricane Maria.
True community resiliency goes beyond providing people with support services in the event of an emergency.
Resiliency requires preparedness, training, knowledge of where the weakest or neediest are, and determining what provisions are necessary to deal effectively with the emergency.
